How the Tooth Fairy Came To Be

Posted .

We all remember when we were younger, we would lose a tooth and anxiously wait to see how much money we would get from the tooth fairy. But have you ever thought where that idea came from?

Originally the tradition comes from Northern Europe as early as the year 1200, it was said that lost teeth were to bring good luck in battle. Other origins state that a Scandinavian Viking would pay children for their lost teeth. In China, Japan, and Korea, lost teeth meant a child could make a wish on the tooth. The tooth would be hidden by the parents, and if the child found the tooth, they would get to make a second wish.

The present idea of a tooth fairy becomes more common around the 1900’s when they were depicted as a little fairy that would bring money as a reward for the tooth. The fairy idea became more popular when Walt Disney’s magical characters became more present.
